Therefore, we will use the standard of a playoff appearance as the baseline for the team reaching the desired goal for the regular season.Winning Percentage (.583)Since 2002, the Steelers have entered the bye with a record of .500 or greater 12 times. In those seasons, the Steelers have made the playoffs 11 out of the 12 occasions. The lone exception was in 2009 when the Steelers entered their Week 8 bye with a record of 5-2 and on a four-game winning streak. The Steelers finished 9–7 for the season and finished third in the AFC North while missing the playoffs.Winning Streak (2)One reason Steelers fans feel the team is heading in the right direction as they enter the bye is due to winning the last two contests. The Steelers have had a win streak of two games or more going into the bye week five times since 2002. While the tight end position has been used more as blockers than pass catchers this season, losing McDonald will still be a big blow to the offense if he can’t clear the NFL’ strict Concussion Protocol.If McDonald can’t play next Sunday night, you should expect a couple things to happen. The first football game of the 2019 NFL calendar wasn’t a kind one for the quarterbacks involved in Thursday night’s Hall of Fame Game.Neither Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan played for their respective teams. He completed just 4 of 14 passes for 10 yards and was intercepted by Trey Johnson in the fourth quarter after replacing an injured Benkert. Schaub’s passer rating for the night was a paltry 9.8.Before departing, Benkert completed 19 of 34 passes for 185 yards and tossed a touchdown to Brian Hill to end the first half.If Schaub’s efforts the rest of the preseason mirror that of his opening performance in Canton, the Falcons may need to consider a different backup option headed into 2019.Meanwhile, Denver’s trio wasn’t particularly glowing either. Kevin Hogan completed 5 of 8 passes for 37 yards after getting the starting nod with Flacco held out. Lock, the rookie second-round pick out of Missouri, completed 7 of 11 passes but for just 34 yards and Brett Rypien went 5 of 10 for 41 yards and a jump ball touchdown pass to Juwaan Winfree that gave the Broncos the 14-10 victory.Broncos G.M. John Elway discussed Lock’s first outing with Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth on the broadcast.“I think that Drew is a very talented young guy that we think has got a bright future ahead,” Elway said. “I think that he saw some different things that he wasn’t expecting, saw a little bit more man coverage than he was planning on seeing. Saw a little pressure and wasn’t really ready about it. But excited about Drew. I think he’s in a good situation to be able to learn from Joe.“I can still remember my first start in preseason. It’s a big deal. This resulted in the Raiders having the oldest 53-man roster in the NFL, That’s not a long-term strategy and never was designed to be, and it was been totally turned upside-down this year as the current Raiders roster is incredibly young, with an average age of 25.35 years (yes, I did this math myself thank you very much).For reference, the youngest team in the NFL last season after the 53-man cuts was the Cincinnati Bengals, who were on average 25.2 years old, and the Browns came in second with an average age of 25.3 years old, identical to the Raiders’ current 90-man roster. The Raiders’ average age in 2018 was 27.4, which was nearly six months older on average than the 31st oldest team, the Atlanta Falcons whose average age was 26.9.Oakland also had the oldest team in 2014, with a veteran lineup surrounding rookies Derek Carr and Khalil Mack for an average age of 27 even, but made the playoffs in 2016 with the 13th-youngest roster of 26 years even on average.The Raiders are mostly made up currently of players 27 years old and younger, and have only six players over the age of 29 on their roster, one of whom is the long snapper, Andrew DePaola, and none of whom are over the age of 31. Contrast this to last season when the opening week roster included aged veterans Donald Penn, Reggie Nelson, Jordy Nelson, Marshawn Lynch and several other players who were long in the tooth. That has sent the Raiders into a downward spiral they still haven't escaped.The Raiders (1-5) are reeling as they head into Sunday's game against the Colts (2-5), having traded away No. 1 receiver Amari Cooper to Dallas earlier in the week after previously dealing away star pass rusher Khalil Mack before the season. The trio of Carr, Cooper and Mack were the foundation pieces in Oakland, but now only Carr remains and the team is once again rebuilding."For me, being in my fifth year, it's hard if I'm being honest," Carr said. "Just going out there, I feel like we've had to do this a couple of times in my early five years. That part is hard. At the same time, it doesn't change my mindset."The Raiders have gone just 7-17 since that victory over the Colts and changed coaches, with Jon Gruden coming in this season to replace the fired Jack Del Rio.Carr's level of play has also dropped, with him throwing 29 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in his 21 games since then, compared to 38 TD passes and 13 interceptions in the previous 21 games."I definitely feel like a better player," Carr said. "I'm smarter. I know more. Talent-wise, I think after last year just recovering from injury, I'm back to my strength and my speed how I want it to be. Absolutely I believe that I have nothing but the best out in front of me. It's only the fifth 100-yard game during Andrew Luck's seven NFL seasons. Also, Luck has been sacked only once in his last 125 pass attempts after getting sacked 166 times in his first 77 career games."We must stay vigilant in all areas and we've got a great challenge against an aggressive Oakland defense, a defense that's tough to figure out," Luck said.WHERE'S THE BEAST?Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch went on injured reserve this week with a groin injury, leaving a big void in Oakland's offense. Lynch leads the Raiders with 372 yards rushing. Now the bulk of the load will go to Doug Martin, whose 3.0 yards per carry the past three seasons is the lowest in the NFL among players with at least 150 attempts. Third-down back Jalen Richard could also take on a bigger role as a runner, and DeAndre Washington figures to get his first action of the season after being hampered by a knee injury in training camp."You can't bring another Marshawn Lynch into the game, but we have a solid group of backs who can get the job done," Richard said.MITCHELL'S RETURNColts safety Mike Mitchell was out of the league until two weeks ago. Now, he's about to make his first trip back to the Black Hole since he left Oakland in 2012. And while Mitchell said he enjoyed the fans while he was there, the AFC's reigning defensive player of the week isn't sure what to expect. But the Raiders' second-round draft pick in 2009 is just glad to have found a home."I could be winning an award this week, they could be calling for my head next week," Mitchell said. "I just take everything with a grain of salt."JUST FOR KICKSThe final game of Gruden's first stint as . GMs and their staffs fail over and over and over in their attempt to find talent in each level of the draft and yet they keep their jobs and are granted another year or more to pick names out of a hat and slap them on their “wish list”. Of course, a lot goes into scouting players, watching film and interviewing guys by asking really stupid questions but with such consistent inconsistency it really doesn’t seem like a big exaggeration to say that you and I could be just as good at seeing NFL talent/intelligence in college players than these “pros”. The key word here is intelligence and it’d be fitting to add the words character or perhaps “football player” as well. Scouts and GMs and football nerds can spend countless hours in watching film and say which players are the fastest, quickest, strongest or baddest but they can’t seem to be able to recognize the players that have “it.”The “it” factor is vitally important to finding athletes who will be successful in the top level of football and discovering this and elite physical talent in a young player seems to be nearly impossible. John Elway has apparently realized the importance of “it” and intelligence in young players, and in 2018 he brought in a group of what appears to be really smart and skilled guys. We should all hope that in doing his research he will find the same success in 2019 and other future drafts. Now, who do I think will be the right fit at #10 in terms of ability and character? Of course it’s a crap-shoot as always but I’ll throw out three names that both make some sense and have been rumored to have peeked the interest of the big wigs at Dove Valley. Devin WhiteWhite is a guy I have liked since the regular season ended and the discussion about this draft class began. He’s crazy fast and athletic for an ILB and won the Butkus award as the top LB in the NCAA last season. He was also a full-time captain for his sophomore season and thus clearly shows the ability to be a leader both on and off the field. Love it. Drew LockI have not been so hot about Lock, but he does appear to be a guy with very good leadership skills and a fantastic personality. He is a media darling and would be a really good “face of the franchise” and that together with his big arm and ability to make all the throws does, in fact, put him on my list of guys the Broncos should look at. That said, I firmly believe that he’s not a top-ten talent and I don’t think that the Broncos will select him that high.Ed OliverOliver may be my favorite personality in the whole list of top 10 candidates. He claims that his absurd strength and toughness come from “being a country boy” and working with horses since he was a kid.
